Years in Salzburg
Actually Gabrielle Kalke Hinterbuchner only fell in love with Salzburg at the second glance . In the 90s she worked with American students in the city of Mozart. During the same time she met her future husband. She went back to the USA, finished her master’s degree and got married in 2000 – thats how she finally moved to to Salzburg.
At first the native Australian had to get used to the fact that people in Salzburg push the streets forward in crowded lines. “You have to fight more for your place here, it’s a completely different mentality.” Gabrielle struggled with prejudice in 2001 – after the terrorist attacks of September 11th. “I noticed that, as an American, I was looked in a quite weird way. At that time, nobody knew what the Americans were going to do next. That was bad.”
Today Gabrielle is the head of the English Center on Haunspergstrasse. She prefers to spend her free time on Mönchsberg. “When I was working with the students, my apartment was up there. I felt like the princess from Mönchsberg.” Today Salzburg became one of her homelands. “I gave a large part of my life to Salzburg, born and raised my children here. Yes, it is my home.”
