Education and training are important for a good and secure future. In Austria, the compulsory school takes nine years. As a parent, it is important to attend parent conference days, parent-teacher meetings and school events. That is how you know everything about the school.

WHAT ARE THE COMPULSORY SCHOOL YEARS IN AUSTRIA?

In Austria every 6 to 15-year-old must attend school. Public schools are free. After the nine compulsory school years, there are different ways for your child to continue.

WHERE CAN YOUR CHILD GET HELP WITH THEIR HOMEWORK?

The Lerncafé is an offer from Caritas for 6 to 15-year-olds, who need help with finishing homework and studying. If you earn under a certain income threshold, this offer is free for your children. Volunteers and professionally trained people work at the Lerncafé.

WHERE CAN YOU GET AFTER-SCHOOL CARE FOR YOUR CHILD?

Currently, 30 schools in Austria offer after-school care. Your child can get lunch there, help with homework and leisure activities. You can sign up either directly at the school or at the association for leisure facilities. The application must happen in the first school week, at the latest.

Your child’s native language is not German:

In the City of Salzburg there is the counselling and information centre B.I.K for parents and children whose native languages are not German. There you can get help with questions and problems on the subject of school in a personal conversation.

HOW CAN YOU SIGN YOUR CHILD UP FOR A NURSERY SCHOOL?

  • Directly at a nursery school after the age of 3
  • Applications are mostly made from the middle of January to the end of March in preparation for the following autumn. Applications for the child must be made personally with the child directly at the desired institution. The best way is to make an appointment beforehand.

Please take along following documents:

  • The child’s vaccination certificate
  • The legal guardian’s evidence of employment
  • The registration form of the child or the legal guardian
  • The child’s birth certificate

Compulsory nursery school year:

The half day attendance at a nursery school (a total of 16 hours) is compulsory in Austria. This applies to the year before school. This one nursery school year is free. More info is available here:
