Games, fun and finding friends – all this in a lovely environment. Proper childcare is important for all parents. There are many possibilities in the City of Salzburg, where your offspring are well looked after.
There are places which are run by the city and other places which are run by private organisations. Childcare isn’t free in Salzburg, but school attendance does not cost anything.
Toddlers’ groups (for children aged 0 to 3 years old)
Nursery school (for children aged 3 to 6 years old)
Age-based groups (for children aged 0 to 6 years old)
Childcare of school children (from 6 years old)
Day-care staff (people that individually look after the children in their own house)
WHEN CAN A CHILD ATTEND A MUNICIPAL NURSERY SCHOOL?
When the child and the legal guardian (parents) live in the City of Salzburg
When the child is 3 years old
WHEN DOES A CHILD HAVE TO ATTEND A MUNICIPAL NURSERY SCHOOL (COMPULSORY NURSERY YEAR?)
At the latest, all children must attend nursery school one year before they go to school. The children must attend nursery school or a playgroup at least 16 hours on 4 working days per week. 20 hours care per week are free for the kids, more hours must be paid.
WHERE AND HOW CAN YOU SIGN YOUR CHILD UP FOR A MUNICIPAL NURSERY SCHOOL?
The application for the child must be personally made with the child directly at the desired nursery school. Applications mostly take place at the beginning of the year (January or February), in preparation for the following autumn.
The birth certificate of the child
The registration form of the child or the legal guardian
Evidence of Employment
YOUR CHILD DOES NOT SPEAK GERMAN
In some municipal nursery schools, language development is offered through the “Backpack Project”, where children and their parents can learn together.
