years in Salzburg
Five years ago, Mohammad Sadeghi fled his home in Afghanistan because the political and economic situation there was no longer acceptable for him. He came from Kabul to Mittersill. In contrast to the Afghan metropolis, he met almost no-one on the streets of SalzburgerLand. “I waited half an hour before I saw someone. That was very unusual and quite difficult for me. I thought – no-one lives here!”
Mohammad had to deal with prejudice every day. “The people thought that hiding behind every foreigner was a terrorist. Or that all foreigners are automatically Muslims.” However, Mohammad too had prejudices when he came to Austria. He believed that all Austrians could speak German well. “But that is not always true”, he laughs.
Today, Mohammad works looking after young refugees who do not have any relative or guardian here. For new Salzburg residents, he recommends learning German as good as possible. This makes it easier to make new contacts and also to find a job.
